For the hotel installation, I made an idol/ tribal fetish and placed it under the sink. The theme of the show was secrets and I wanted to make something that had a primitive and supernatural feel.

The idol was made from a combination of clay, oyster shells, twine, cloth, wood and brown paper. The idol had a slightly human shape to give it a much more eerie appearance.

Research:

I looked at a lot of tribal fetishes for this piece. I wanted to get something that had the look of being haphazardly put together with parts lying around.

Also this:

H.P. Lovecraft was into and wrote heavily about things of a weird supernatural nature.

Circles

" Unlike a straight line, moreover, a circle demarcates and encloses a spatial field."

This sentence inspired me to simply draw circles repetitively. 

I drew a lot of circles.

Hallway installation

My sense was touch ( sorry bad pictures) and for this piece I wanted to create something that gave you sense of anxiety. Oyster shells are a bit disturbing, there are wooden prods sticking out at you, it smells bad. When you entered there was a sense of your space being attacked.

Research:


The only thing I did in terms of research was explore the materials I had on hand. The oyster shells were given to me by a friend during a cookout. I kept the shells thinking I could do something with them, not knowing exactly what. Upon examining the shells I found that they possessed very rough and sharp texture. Their smell was also slightly nauseating and made me not want to handle them at all. These observation would eventually lead me to use theses shells in my theme for touch and creating an anxious environment for the viewer to step in.

Aboriginal Ancestors (Spell of the Sensuous)

" Kangaroo Dreaming Man, Frilled Lizard Man, Tortoise Woman, Little Wallaby Man, Emu Woman and innumerable ancestors wandered, singing, across its surface, they shaped that surface by their actions, forming plains where they lay down, creeks or waterholes where they urinated, forests where they kicked up dust, and so on."


This line of text was great as it inspired me to  look up figures from aboriginal mythology. To my surprise there were very few depictions of these figures. So naturally I decided to draw my own.

Site Specific Art piece: Leaves

For this piece, I gathered and spray painted  leaves that fell in my front yard.

Research:

When making this piece I thought mostly of the work of Robert Smithson

This imagery inspired me to collect a lot of something and then gather it into some kind of pattern.

Fudge Bucket (Peephole Installation)

My peephole installation. I collaborated with a local business called Fudge Buckets and created something that I feel conveys a lot about that establishment. First off, I sculpted fudge, a first for me, and created a scene within my bucket that reflects what goes on in the store.

Research:

It benefits one to go to the site/business and get a feel for it

It also helps to try the food.

Going to the site helped me to get an overall mood for the establishment that I think reflects in my piece. Fudge Buckets is this weird, quirky, family friendly restaurant that likes to serve fudge of various flavors. They also literally serve food in a bucket. According to the owners, keeping the fudge in a tiny plastic bucket keeps it from drying out quickly. Makes sense.  As for their other food, the buckets are mainly just there to stick with the theme. I naturally had to use a bucket in my work.
